-Edward Lantz has no beefs with his apartment – when he moved in to 260 Wellesley St. E., the floors had been refinished and the walls freshly painted.
But as he gazes across his balcony to another building in this St. James Town housing complex, he sees problems.
Drug dealers and users head into crack houses. Inside are cockroaches. Rats. Holes in the ceilings, holes in the walls, water leaking through the pipes.
So when a representative of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) came knocking on his door in April seeking to start a chapter in his neighbourhood, he quickly jumped on board. Now he's chair of the budding chapter of a group that knocks on doors in low- and moderate-income neighbourhoods to help residents lobby for everything from cleaner buildings to a higher minimum wage.
